Migration from Umbraco v7 to v10 on Umbraco Cloud.

We worked with Blakemore Hyde Park to migrate their unsupported V7 Umbraco website to the latest long term support (LTS) version of Umbraco. Umbraco ended support for version 7 in September 2023 and because of this it was important for business' to upgrade their systems to the latest version.

In addition to the migration of their existing website, we also migrated the project into Umbraco Cloud so that Blakemore can benefit from automated Umbraco updates, ensuring the website is kept constantly secure.

Our approach

As with all Umbraco V7 migrations, we firstly needed to asses what plugins are being used and if these can be migrated to newer versions. Newer versions of Umbraco (9+) run on a newer technology called .NET Core and therefore some plugins and code from older Umbraco systems (V8 and below) might not work.

We have to identify the packages that will and won't work, along with code that might break as a result of migrating. Once we've identified this it's down to us to provide recommendations and ultimately solutions that means the same functionality exists.

Additionally, we have to consider content. Specifically, we had to consider what data types were being used. Certain data types are being phased out in favour of newer practices, so it's important that when migrating data types such as nested content we consider migrating this into what is now block lists.

What else?

In addition to the migration of the Umbraco website, we also took over hosting; not just for Blakemore, but also their parent company and sister hotel, Norfolk Towers.

The Umbraco website is hosted with Umbraco Cloud and benefits from frequent updates to the latest version of Umbraco. Norfolk Towers and the parent company remain hosted separately with a WordPress hosting provider.

We carry out regular checks for all of our hosted websites and offer completive support packages for our clients, with dedicated support portals and SLA's.
